Mendelssohn Symphony No.1 Nico Muhly New 3 minute piece (UK Premiere) Schoenberg Chamber Symphony No.1 Mendelssohn Violin Concerto
Familiar and unfamiliar Mendelssohn frame this programme from Sinfonia Viva. His astonishingly mature 1st Symphony, written at the age of 15, is still too little known. The Violin Concerto (actually his second), on the other hand, has long been a popular favourite. American composer Nico Muhly’s new piece has been commissioned by Sinfonia Viva and is receiving its world premiere. Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony no 1 is an early work that shares something of the same expressive world as the music of Mahler and Richard Strauss - energetic and lyrical by turns.

Conductor Mark Elder Soloist Alina Pogostkina (violin)
Haydn Symphony No. 48, 'Marie Therese' Sibelius Violin Concerto Mendelssohn Symphony No. 3, 'Scottish'
Haydn’s Symphony no 48 is in his most brilliant ceremonial style, and features some spectacularly high-pitched horn writing. Fast-rising Russian star Alina Pogostkina lives in Germany where she currently studies with Antje Weithaas, the soloist in our January concert! She has made the Sibelius Concerto very much her own, after her winning performance of it at the Sibelius Violin Competition in Helsinki in 2005. Mendelssohn’s 3rd Symphony was prompted by his visit to Scotland in 1829, and moves between brooding atmosphere and fiery energy.
