Early works by the two dominant figures of late 18th-century European music. Haydn’s Symphony no 28 sparkles with his customary wit and high spirits. Mozart’s Piano Concerto no 9 is not just his first important piano concerto, but his first fully mature work of any kind, a daringly original work with a profoundly moving slow movement. Tchaikovsky’s Serenade is one of his most lovable pieces, with a vigorous finale based on two Russian folk tunes.
