Mendelssohn     A Midsummer Night’s Dream: overture and incidental music

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of Shakespeare’s best-loved plays, and the music  Mendelssohn wrote for it - the overture he composed at the age of 17 and the incidental music that followed nearly twenty years later - is one of his best-loved scores. Viva give us an unmissable opportunity to hear the familiar (and some less well-known) music in its dramatic context. Kurt Weill’s 2nd Symphony was his last purely orchestral work, full of the tangy harmonies and sublimated popular dance rhythms familiar from stage scores like The threepenny opera.
